Would you believe I’ve been waiting over a month to share this post with you? I originally wanted to write a regular post gushing about how great Empire is, and about how much everybody should watch it and why it’s my new show blah blah blah; but then I decided to do something a little more creative. Since I love the show so much, I wanted to share five things I love the most about it, in order to celebrate the last Thursday of this god-awful month (wow that sounds really dramatic…). So anyway, here are some of the five things that makes Empire one of my favourites.
I don’t know what it is exactly that draws me to Cookie, but there’s something that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. She dresses like she lives in a modern day nineties music video, and despite its tendency to border on being garish, Cookie makes it work. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way Taraji P. Henson plays here – sidebar: this woman needs an award. I’m not sure how to fully describe Cookie without making her sound like that stereotypical black woman (even though she kind of is), but she’s got heart, she’s feisty and she really is the ultimate matriarch (read into that what you will – especially if you know about the stereotypes afforded to women of colour on television…). Hands down, Cookie is my favourite character.
Oh god the music is one of the main things I love about this show. Every week there’s a new tune I want to download and rock out to. Every week I’m blown away by the sheer talent of the songwriters and singers. I basically spend every episode covered in chills and wishing the songs would never end. And if that’s not a reason to love the show, then I don’t know what is… aside from everything else on this list lol 😛
I probably should have started with this one first, but compared to Cookie and the music, the storyline kind of takes a backseat even though it’s obviously such an integral part of the show – DUH – but that’s just how my mind works. Empire is about a music empire started by Lucious and his-wife Cookie, who has been released from prison following seventeen years behind bars for drug dealing in order to help with the business in the early days. They have three sons: Andre, Jamal and Hakeem who each play a different part in the company. As it turns out, Lucious pits his sons against each other in the hope of finding a successor which results in drama GALORE. The episodes are filled with enough sass, music and drama you’ll be glued to your screen and tweeting about it all day long.
Jamal’s voice is like melted butter on toast – so scrummy and delicious, you can’t get enough. There’s so much passion and feeling in this young man’s voice (think John Legend) that it’s a wonder I haven’t cried through one of his performances yet. Ugh this man is oh so talented and needs a Grammy in his life ASAP.
THE WHOLE CAST
And finally the last thing I love about this show is THE WHOLE CAST. They all come together so perfectly to form such an incredible show and I can’t help but feel so proud of them. In fact, my older sister and I were talking about how much we loved the cast, and my sister mentioned how she loved the fact that all these great black actors could come together for this. I certainly feel the same, especially growing up watching Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, and Raven Symone (when she popped up I almost died hahaha). I’m constantly floored by the guest stars featuring everybody from Naomi Campbell to Courtney Love, who all deliver such powerful performances. Oh god this show is just everything and so much more!
I hope you get a chance to check out this series, and let me know what you think.
Now that that’s done I’m going to spend the evening watching last night’s episode – I can’t believe the series is coming to an end 😦
